A guide to the miracles
Miracles
Jesus performed about 37 specifically-named miracles in three years of public ministry — plus many more that the gospels reference in summary. Healings, exorcisms, raising the dead, controlling the weather, multiplying food.
This page covers the named miracles in the order they happened, then the gospels' summary references to mass healings. Each entry has roughly when it took place (his age + relation to the start of his ministry and his death), what he did, who it was for, the key thing he said, and what he was trying to accomplish — which wasn't always what people assumed.

Jesus was crucified, killed, and buried in a sealed tomb with Roman guards posted. On the third day, the tomb was empty. Over the next 40 days he appeared to more than 500 people, ate meals with the disciples, let Thomas touch the scars, and then ascended.
Who he did it for
For the disciples, the women, his half-brother James, Paul, and hundreds of others.
What he said
"He is not here; he has risen, just as he said." — an angel at the tomb, Matthew 28:6
The goal The miracle the entire Christian movement rests on. Without it, Jesus is just another martyred teacher.

Miracle
Second miraculous catch of fish

After the resurrection, filled the disciples' nets with fish for a second time. Then made them breakfast.
When
About 33. Within the 40 days after his resurrection.
What he did
After the resurrection, the disciples had gone fishing and caught nothing. A figure on the shore (Jesus, but they didn't recognize him at first) told them to throw the nets on the right side of the boat. They caught 153 large fish — and the net didn't break.
Who he did it for
For the disciples — particularly Peter, who Jesus reinstated over breakfast after this.
What he said
"Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." — Jesus, John 21:6
The goal Mirrored the first miraculous catch from three years earlier — bookending his ministry. Then he forgave Peter publicly for the three denials.

What he said
"This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." — the angels, Acts 1:11

Healed an entire town outside the house where he was staying after the Sabbath ended.
When
About 30. Very early in his Galilean ministry. About 3 years before his death.

What he said
"The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons." — Mark 1:33–34

When
About 31. Around the time he formally appointed the Twelve, roughly a year into his ministry. About 2 years before his death.

What he said
"The people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all." — Luke 6:19

Toured every town in the region healing people. Described the crowds as worn out and leaderless.
When
About 31. Second year of ministry. About 2 years before his death.

What he said
"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." — Matthew 9:36

Miracle
Healings during John the Baptist's question
type: Mass healing · Matthew 11:2–6, Luke 7:18–23
Put simply
Healed dozens of people in front of John the Baptist's messengers instead of answering their question with words.
When
About 31. Second year of ministry — John was in prison and would soon be beheaded. About 2 years before his death.
What he did
When John the Baptist's disciples came asking whether Jesus was the one they'd been waiting for, Jesus didn't answer with words — he kept healing. The gospel notes that at that very moment he cured many of diseases, sicknesses, evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. Then he told John's disciples to report what they had just watched happen.
Who he did it for
For the sick in front of him — and as evidence for an imprisoned John the Baptist.
What he said
"Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor." — Jesus, Luke 7:22
The goal His answer to "Are you the Messiah?" was to keep healing in front of the messengers and let the demonstration speak.

For the sick who pursued him even as he avoided public confrontation.
What he said
"Many followed him, and he healed all who were ill." — Matthew 12:15

When
About 31. When he returned to his hometown during the second year. About 2 years before his death.
What he did

Who he did it for
For the few in his hometown who would let him.
What he said
"He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them." — Mark 6:5
The goal The text says "could not" — not "would not." Suggests his miracles operated in relationship, not as solo power displays.

Miracle
The unrecorded miracles
type: Mass healing · John 20:30, John 21:25
Put simply
The gospels explicitly say there were many more miracles than they could write down. The named 37 are a small sample of what actually happened.
When
Throughout his ministry — ages 30 to 33.
What he did
The four gospels record about 37 named miracles. But they explicitly note that this is a small sample — Jesus performed so many miracles that John says the world's books couldn't contain them all if every one were written down.
Who he did it for
For untold numbers of people whose names and stories were never recorded.
What he said
"Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." — John 21:25
The goal John ended his gospel by making sure readers knew: this was a sample, not a complete list.
